THE MADHOUSE AND THE WOMAN WITH GAMBLING MANIA

For this assignment, we will discuss ‘the madhouse’ and ‘the woman with gambling mania.’ They are some of the greatest pieces in the history of art. Goya did ‘the madhouse’ painting while in an asylum. He did two paintings while in isolation after falling sick and being incapacitated for a long while. The Woman with a Gambling Mania is an oil on canvas painting done in 1822. The time he made most of his artworks makes Theodore Gericault’s art very unique. The painting is an image of an older woman believed to be suffering from malicious envy and hysteria. It was at a low point in his life. Theodore and Francisco Goya’s paintings are very significant, as they portrayed their deepest feelings and desires at low points of their lives. ROMANTICISM IN ART BY THEODORE GERICAULT

This section focuses on the elements of romanticism in Theodore Gericault’s art. His painting of The Raft of Medusa won a gold medal in the 1819 Paris Salon, but the Louvre never bought it. He ended up suffering from depression. He considered the painting one of his best in his history of art. Theodore was a romanticist painter who shared the same view with doctors that victims’ faces can express mental illness. In the painting of ‘the woman with gambling mania,’ her face has a twisted expression. Her head is leaning slightly forward, and her mouth shows disapproval from its drawn back appearance. Theodore and Francisco Goya’s paintings showed aspects of romanticism in the way they painted around the central figure. Read more of romanticism in art by Theodore Gericault at

THE MADHOUSE, HISTORY OF FRANCISCO GOYA AND HIS PAINTINGS

Apart from Theodore Gericault’s art, Francisco Goya had similar artworks based on the time of their lives they did the artworks. In 1824, Francisco Goya arrived in the city of Bordeaux as a self-imposed exile from Spain. The creation of Francisco Goya’s paintings occurred at a time when he had fallen out of favor from a political regime. He had a difficult time, given the political regime was his primary source of support. Additionally, he was old and deaf since 1793. While in Bordeaux, he tried to diversify his art and worked with several other painters, which made him one of the most respected painters in the history of art. Goya began a set of highly experimental miniatures on ivory, creating haunting images. Read more of the history of Francisco Goya and his paintings at
