MATERNAL MORTALITY AND MORBIDITY AND INFANT MORTALITY RATE

This paper analyzes maternal mortality and morbidity and infant mortality rate; maternal mortality refers to death due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth. From 2000 to 2017, the global maternal mortality ratio has declined by 38% though in some parts of Africa the rate is trill high. Maternal mortality often results in infant mortality especially in cases where there is a complication during birth. Most of the maternal mortality cases are as a result of hemorrhage, sepsis, malaria, viral hepatitis, and hypertensive disease of pregnancy, obstructed labor, and unsafe abortion. Unsafe abortion is common among young girls who experience early pregnancies. The world health organization aims at reducing these cases more by ensuring proper maternal healthcare in developing countries.

PREVENTION OF MATERNAL MORTALITY AND MORBIDITY

Prevention of maternal mortality and morbidity occurs in the following ways. Antenatal care which involves screening during pregnancy to identify those at risk of obstetric complications. This helps in recognition of the hypertensive disease in pregnancy and the detection and treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria. Pregnant women are also encouraged to observe measures for the prevention and treatment of malaria. Prevention of anemia is also essential by ensuring the consumption of foods rich in iron. Vitamin A supplementation also helps to reduce the length of labor, night blindness, and nausea which many women experience. Prenatal counseling is essential in ensuring proper maternal healthcare during pregnancy. The provision of skilled attendance during labor and at birth helps to protect the mother and also reduces infant mortality rate.

CAUSES OF INCREASED INFANT MORTALITY RATE

The infant mortality rate is on the rise due to the following causes. Birth defects occur during labor and delivery. Preterm birth and low birth weight bring about the weakness of the infant which commonly results in death. This is prevented by the proper nutrition of the mother during pregnancy. Maternal pregnancy complication is also a cause of infant mortality. These complications may also cause maternal mortality and morbidity. Since the immunity of newborn children is still weak, small injuries and incidents like suffocation probably lead to their death. The increased infant mortality rate is also a result of sudden infant death syndrome. For the well-being of the infants, all these signs call for proper maternal healthcare since most of them call for the protection of the mother.
