OVERVIEW OF WOMEN’S CHALLENGES IN THE MILITARY
Women in the military face challenges like retention, military sexual trauma and gender discrimination, and other mental health issues. Women who marry and get children often leave the military to serve family roles. While some would like to return, they perceive that military policies do not support women’s roles as mothers. This may even deter others aiming at joining the military and forming families. Sexual harassment and the discrimination of women in the armed forces are critical issues to address as well. Other women struggle with their identity while trying to adjust to societal expectations. Addressing women’s challenges in the military can help encourage more women to join the armed forces.

HISTORY OF WOMEN IN THE MILITARY
During the Revolutionary War, women in the military served as nurses, sewists and cooks for troops in camp. Some were courageous enough to serve in combat either alongside their husbands or disguised as men. Since joining the military was disallowed for women, some operated as spies for the cause. They would alert troops to enemy movement and would even transport contraband. Thus, they shared soldiers’ hardships, including inadequate housing and little compensation. They were to adhere to the Army’s rules of conduct as well. Therefore, women’s challenges in the military are not anything new. They stepped up to work in areas of military intelligence, cryptography, parachute rigging, maintenance, and supply.
