The effects may be similar to those of such risk factors as high blood pressure, obesity, and smoking. However, not every isolated person is lonely, and not every lonely person is isolated. Having less physical activity also relates to some of the effects of social isolation. Physical activity helps control blood sugar, weight, and blood pressure. It also regulates the amount of cholesterol in our bodies. Adequate physical activity can also help reduce the risk of heart disease and nerve damage, which are often problems for people with diabetes. Physical activity helps to counter most of the risk factors to health effectively.
