The sustainable development of Mekong, as well as its economic development, faces several issues that derail its success. The mighty Mekong faces conflicting pressures for developing its floodplains and harnessing its powerful flow. Agriculture is the primary economic activity along the river. Additionally,  fish production, transportation, and electricity generation complement this. Challenges in the Greater Mekong, however, continues to hamper the sustainable goals. Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam signed an Agreement for the Sustainable Development of the Mekong River Basin in 1995. Lastly, the durable and economic development of Mekong requires the help of policies to guide them through the challenges ahead.
