I wandered lonely as a cloud is one of William Wordsworth’s fine works of poetry. The author wrote the poem between the year of 1804 and 1807. It was first published in 1807 and then again in 1815. It is commonly known as Daffodils, and it brings out various themes of literature. The poem’s inspiration comes from a time in 1802 the 15th of April when William came across daffodils. William was on a walk with his sister Dorothy in the Lakeside District in England, their residence at the time. Whereas in other poems, identification is more straightforward. The themes evident in I wandered lonely as a cloud are a memory and the past, happiness and spirituality. William brings out the memory and the past by reminiscing on what has already happened but brings him joy. He brings out the theme of happiness with the fact that the daffodils give him a boost of pleasure. Lastly, comparison of the daffodils to stars that shine and angels depicts the aspect of spirituality. These themes combined bring out a beautiful meaning to the poem.

The formalist approach in literature considers the authors work as independent from the time period, social setting and authors background. It analyses the literary devices which are elements that form the poem. These elements include style, structure, tone and imagery. In the poem, I wandered lonely as a cloud; the author brings out some of these elements. There is imagery by the mention of “milky way” that represents his feelings. A metaphor, “flashing upon the inward eye” is used by the author to describe the sweet memory of the daffodils. Furthermore, the author personifies the daffodils “When all at once, I saw a crowd” by giving them a human attribute. Essentially, the formalist approach aids in emphasizing the themes of literature in the poem.
