AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES

Air traffic management helps in the control and navigation of unmanned aerial vehicles. An air traffic management system in aviation terms includes all the systems that assist the aircraft to depart from an aerodrome. They also control the transit of the aircraft within the airspace and landing at the given destinations. This system, therefore, includes components like air traffic control (ATC), air traffic service (ATS), aerospace management (ASM) and air traffic flow and capacity management (ATFCM). Unmanned aerial vehicles refer to aircraft that carry no human pilots or passengers. These crafts are often controlled remotely by a human pilot and they can be fully or partly autonomous.

CLASSIFICATION OF UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES

There are two major classes of unmanned aerial vehicles. These are according to size, and according to the range. When classifying them according to the size, there are four major subclasses. These include very small UAVs such as mosquito, skate and cyber quad mini. The second subclass is the small UAVs. For example, the raven B. third is the medium class such as pioneer and hunter. Fourthly are the large UAVs such as the global hawk which are mostly controlled by the air traffic management systems. The second classification is according to endurance which has five subclasses. These are; very close range, close range, short-range, medium-range and endurance range.

THE FUNCTIONS OF AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS.

The air traffic management system performs various functions both in the air space and on the landing and takeoff grounds. This is because they are responsible for the provision of air traffic services that ensure both the safe and efficient conduct of aircraft. This includes both manned and unmanned aerial vehicles. Moreover, the systems provide advisory services to the pilots to ensure that there is proper communication and safety within the airspace. Also, they provide alerting services especially to the pilots in case of any dangers or any risks when they are airborne thus reducing risks of aviation accidents. Additionally, they manage the flight information for the various aircraft.
