Youth substance abuse has various consequences. First, it leads to a decline in grades and absenteeism from school. This is because those who use drugs have a lower level of school commitment hence affecting academic performance. Secondly, it interferes with a person’s physical health since it may lead to injuries due to accidents, physical disabilities, and diseases. Research shows that, among the youth, the transmission of HIV/AIDS which is one of the PSY3001 social issues occurs due to sharing of unsterilized drug injection equipment. It can also lead to mental health problems like depression, apathy, withdrawal effect, and other developmental lags. Lastly, it can lead to family crises thus jeopardizing many aspects of family life.

The following are the elements that conditions should have for them to stand as PSY3001 social issues. Firstly, the condition or situation must be resented as objectionable by a significant number of people. Secondly, the condition is undesirable since it has injurious consequences, for example, health consequences of youth substance abuse. Thirdly, the issues want correction through collective action. This, therefore, requires the implementation of some social engineering methods. Also, the issues are not static hence they change in time and space. Lastly, it includes all the aberrant behavior or deviations from accepted norms such as juvenile delinquency, crime, rape, domestic violence, and rape.
