Pollution in the oceans is a form of water pollution which is one of the three types of pollution; Pollution is the process of introducing harmful materials into the environment. The harmful substances are pollutants. Moreover, pollutants can either be natural or a result of human activities. An example of natural pollutants is volcanic ash. Additionally, these pollutants destroy the quality of water, land, and air. Furthermore, human causes of pollution include exhaust gases, burning of coal, and waste from industries. Also, pesticides produce chemical pollutants that harm wildlife when they find their way into waterways. Pollution is a global problem and is more rampant in urban areas than in rural areas.

Contrastingly, pollution in the oceans results from the introduction of harmful substances such as sewage and fertilizers into ocean water. Moreover, other causes of pollution of water in the oceans include radioactive waste and atmospheric deposition. The release of harmful gases into the atmosphere is the primary cause of air pollution. These harmful gases cause acid rain and smog.

Pollution in the oceans disrupts marine life. Furthermore, oil spillage on oceans causes the suffocation of marine animals by blocking their gills leading to their death. Additionally, it disrupts the cycle of coral reefs. It prevents sunlight from reaching the ocean floor which affects photosynthesis. Causes of pollution in the oceans such as deposition of sewage release waste that takes a long time to decompose. This depletes the ocean content in water. Ocean pollution is also among the types of pollution that affect human health. This is through the consumption of marine animals containing toxins from pollution.
