THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION AND U.S. NATIONAL INTERESTS

This assignment examines the Trump administration and U.S. national interests in the Asia-Pacific region. Various developments in the region fuel the interests of the U.S. The United States looks to strengthen its influence, especially because of its rivalry with China. President Trump and Xi Jinping continuously fail to come to agreements regarding ending the trade war between China and the U.S. However, China claims to be uninterested in challenging the U.S. for global superiority. On the other hand, the Trump administration views both countries as being in strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region. Their assumption is that the failure to manage the contest could jeopardize the U.S.

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S RIVALRY WITH CHINA

The rivalry between China and the Trump administration continues to spark international concerns. It shapes strategic debates and real political, military and economic dynamics. The coronavirus pandemic fueled more tensions between the two states. It is likely that the U.S. rivalry with China will continue. The aftermath of the pandemic may cause a shift in global power structures. President Donald Trump seems to regard superiority as an end in itself rather than simply a means to promote particular U.S. national interests and values. President Xi Jinping favors a Chinese vision of world order in which superiority is both means and end.

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION AND THE US-CHINA TRADE WAR

In 2018, the Trump administration imposed more tariffs on China for its alleged unfair trade practices. Since then, there are countless unsuccessful back-and-forth negotiations regarding the ongoing trade war. There are other tariff wars, WTO cases, and foreign technology restrictions that continue to fuel the United States’ rivalry with China. So far, the tariffs imposed on China by the U.S. amount to about $550. China, on the other hand, set tariffs worth $185 billion on U.S. goods. In January 2020, we saw the first signs of a truce between the two countries. Lastly, the agreement meant to balance the Chinese and U.S. national interests by reducing tariffs and other renewed commitments.
