OVERVIEW OF THE EMERGENCE AND SPREAD OF ISIS

This assignment provides an overview of the emergence and spread of ISIS. We can trace the origin of ISIS from the remnants of al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). It was a local offshoot of al Qaeda founded by Abu Musab al Zarqawi in 2004. It faded for several years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2007. However, it began to emerge again in 2011. Afterwards, it took advantage of the growing instability in Iraq and Syria to carry out attacks. At its height, ISIS-held about a third of Syria and 40 percent of Iraq. ISIS holds strong Islamist political ideologies to sustain the ranks. This, therefore, includes decisions to form a caliphate stretching from Aleppo in Syria to Diyala in Iraq.

U.S. APPROACH TO POLITICAL ISLAM

Islamist political ideologies entail legal orders. In many ways, it is also a military doctrine associated with the campaigns of the Prophet Muhammad. Political Islam rejects any distinction between religion and politics, mosque and state. We can attribute the ‘religious’ origin of ISIS to these political ideologies. Additionally, Political Islam even rejects the modern state in favor of a caliphate. Also, it implies a constitutional order fundamentally incompatible with the U.S. Constitution and with the “constitution of liberty”. Some scholars argue that these aggressive ways of politics caused the U.S. invasion of Iraq. However, not all Muslims are Islamists, let alone violent.

OVERVIEW OF THE EMERGENCE AND GLOBAL EFFECT OF US INVASION IN IRAQ

The U.S. invasion of Iraq had lasting effects globally. Due to the influence, Tehran managed to sustain in post-Saddam Iraq, Baghdad became embroiled in the Syrian conflict. The Syrian conflict caused millions of Syrians to flee their homes to seek refuge in Middle Eastern and European countries. Also, most of them cannot survive the intense and aggressive Islamist political ideologies in the region. U.S. President Donald Trump continues to fight long and hard on what the media dubs as a “Muslim ban”. This demonstrates the isolationist and racist tendencies that materialized following the global trauma of the Iraq war. With the origin of ISIS having its base on these ideologies, it becomes hard to convince them otherwise.
