The Irish Literary Revival was an unfolding of Irish literary talent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Additionally, the history of Irish literature is rich and allows its people to have a sense of pride. The greatest dramatist of the movement was John Millington Synge. He wrote plays of great beauty and power in a stylized peasant dialect. Later, the theater turned toward realism, mostly rural realism. Several Irish literary characteristics are common in Irish literature. One characteristic is that much of Irish literature contains a sense of a small, tight-knit community. The history of Irish literature has been existent for over several centuries. As the 20th century drew near in Ireland, a new nationalist cultural revival stirred. It would come to be known as the Irish literary renaissance and would change modern Irish history. It also had to ensure that the Irish literary characteristics remained alive. In 1878 Standish, considered the “father” of this revival, published History of Ireland: the Heroic Period. It nonetheless introduced a new generation of nationalists to the myths and legends of early Irish history.
