Continental drift theory explained how continents shift position on Earth’s surface and the continental drift causes. Fitly, the outline of this theory was done in 1912 by Alfred Wegener. Wegener thought all the continents were once joined together in an “Urkontinent” before breaking up and drifting. Scientists worked hard in confirming the continental drift theory. But geologists soundly denounced Wegener’s theory of continental drift after he published the details in a 1915 book called “The Origin of Continents and Oceans.” Scientists continue to research the causes of making discoveries.
CONFIRMING THE CONTINENTAL DRIFT THEORY AND THE ROLE OF EARTHQUAKE STUDIES
Confirming the continental drift involved scientists setting up seismometers to measure earthquakes. In the 1960s, scientists set up seismometers across the world, allowing them to measure and record the slightest shakings. Additionally, in 1964, Dr. Oliver and Bryan Isacks went to the South Pacific to set up seismic stations. The drifting confirmation is all thanks to the works of Dr. Oliver and Bryan. Also, they puzzled over waves from deep earthquakes, emanating as far down as 400 miles below the surface. Finally, the continental drift theory is essential in the understanding of this drifting.
CAUSES OF THE CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND EVIDENCE OF THE CONTINENTAL DRIFT
The plate tectonic theory entirely explains the continental drift causes. Plates form the Earth’s outer shell that moves a little bit every year. The heat coming from the interior of the Earth triggers this movement to occur through convection currents inside the mantle. Therefore, throughout millions of years ago, this gradual movement caused the once combined supercontinent to separate into seven continents you witness in the present day. Additionally, it highlights the continental drift causes that caused changes in animals as well as plants. Lastly, the plates tectonic theory helps in confirming the drifting by giving sufficient proof through the earth formation.
