IRAQ WAR MEDIA COVERAGE AND IRAQ WAR CRIMES

The Iraq war media coverage failed to report on human rights violations in the Iraq war crimes. Military hearings conducted to assess whether US troops carried out killings took place, but the pentagon influenced the report. Moreover, the pentagon decided to exonerate the soldiers involved in the Iraq war crimes. The occupation forces indeed perpetrated numerous atrocities during the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. Specifically, the military prosecutors decided only to pursue low-ranking soldiers and exonerate high-ranking soldiers such as the commanders. Furthermore, few war crime cases produced relatively light punishments while the majority of the majority murder charges downgraded. Media coverage of the Iraq invasion failed to uphold the critical responsibility of reporting truthfully on ongoing events. The Iraq war media coverage by independent media firms shows sufficient evidence of the Iraq war crimes.

US INVASION OF IRAQ AND SADDAM’ WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION

The motivation for the US’s invasion of Iraq was the information relayed to Washington of Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction program. The US invasion of Iraq was as a result of the nuclear capabilities of Saddam. The capabilities were deemed sufficiently alarming to incite the war. Despite Saddam not having an active WMD program, the explanation has found support among some international relations scholars. Scholars say that the Bush administration was wrong about Saddam’s WMD capabilities, and in invading Iraq. Moreover, the Iraq war media coverage failed to provide a more scrutinized view of the Iraq war. Intelligence is a complicated, murky enterprise for any country. Therefore, given the shadow of the 9/11 attacks, the US government reasonably, if tragically, misread the dangers Saddam posed. The Iraq war crimes by the US-led army included murdering innocent civilians on orders from senior officers.

IRAQ WAR MEDIA COVERAGE AND TRADITIONAL MEDIA FAILINGS IN IRAQ WAR

The Iraq War, waged by a United States-led coalition against Iraq highlighted the failed Iraq coverage by media. Additionally, it did not carry out its scrutiny mandate effectively; thus, the traditional press failed. In addition to failing to report war crimes in Iraq, the media helped the US in covering up. Moreover, it was  unable to scrutinize the reasons for going to war with Iraq. Given the media’s lack of scrutiny, the US invasion of Iraq proved to be a disaster. Consequently, it side-lined and therefore discredited anti-war voices and the compelling argument against the invasion of Iraq. In addition to the unreported war crimes, the media heaped praise on the perpetrators of the war crimes. The media’s ignorance resulted in the crimes going unreported. The sins of the powerful in Iraq highlight the biased media coverage that failed to offer sufficient scrutiny.
