This dissertation explains issues of security in the Caribbean and the Caribbean economies. Security in the region is multidimensional, with military, political, and economic dimensions. Security relates to internal and external threats. The aims of the recent Tradewinds 2017 was to address problems of organized crime and narcotics trafficking. These are some of the security threats affecting the Caribbean economies. Additionally, Caribbean nationalists returning from areas previously controlled by Daesh also pose some danger. This includes problems of hostage-taking and threats to infrastructure. Increased Caribbean food imports are also a major threat to the economy in general. The region should coordinate efforts to improve food sustenance to avoid economically destabilizing consequences.

The twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago is the wealthiest in the region. The country’s GNP is more than $12,735, making it a high-income economy. In recent years, the Caribbean economies have been experiencing a recession, and Trinidad and Tobago are no exception. Jamaica enjoys quite stable economic conditions, with heavy reliance on export revenues from agriculture and mining industries. However, Caribbean food imports are the biggest economic drawback. The Cayman Islands is famous for its 0% tax rate on income earned by individuals and corporations. As a result, the country keeps attracting wealthy people and corporations.

According to 2012 estimates, Caribbean food imports are 83 percent of available food. Most of the Caribbean economies fail to take advantage of the agricultural potential in the region. The Caribbean fruit and vegetable sector provides the greatest opportunities for foreign exchange savings. An import substitution framework would promote food and nutrition security and have positive health impacts. The governments can use the revenues to improve food security in the Caribbean, create more jobs, and revive the agricultural sector. In 2014, Cuba was the leading importer of food with a bill of USD 1.8 billion. The country’s food exports were only about USD 500 million. The second-largest food importer in the region is the Dominican Republic.
