THE POWER OF MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS
All mentoring relationships are, by their very nature, power relationships. The power dynamic is not something to ignore. Indeed, in this post ‘#MeToo era,’ it’s more important to remember the possibility of harming, under the guise of doing good. Not all mentoring relationships are good for our personal and professional development. Some mentors take the opportunity to prey on those they are supposed to mentor. We tend to ascribe mentoring relationships with inherently positive attributes. However, sometimes we fail to recognize that mentors use their role to take advantage of their mentees in intentional and unintentional ways. This serves to show the extent to which our personal constellation systems are in danger in the hands of our mentors.

Personal and professional development entails the inner journey of discovering who you are and setting yourself free to grow in whichever direction is yours. This is a journey towards discovering freedom and happiness. Family and personal constellations help us avoid adverse outcomes when attempting personal and professional development. These outcomes include attracting the wrong partners into your life or are not attracting partners and not sustaining relationships. We need to be conscious of our decisions, aim towards growth, and be authentic. This may even mean getting rid of some mentoring relationships. Some decisions, even if very hard, help to achieve our potential by resolving our doubts, fears, and inner conflicts.
