NUTRITION CARE PROCESS AND MALNUTRITION IN THE ELDERLY

The nutrition care process is essential in addressing malnutrition in the elderly. Nutrition is the study of nutrients in foods and how the body uses them. Also, it looks at the relationship between diet, health, and diseases. Besides, nutrition focuses on how people use dietary choices and reduce the risk of diseases. Consequently, if a person has too much or too little nutrients, there is a risk of malnutrition especially in children and the elderly. Body nutrients are divided into three major groups which are proteins, carbohydrates, and vitamins. Some minor nutrients are essential for the body which is; fats, minerals, fibers, and water.

THE STEPS IN NUTRITION CARE PROCESS

The nutrition care process has four major steps. First, the nutrition assessment and reassessment. This involves the collection of documents and evidence like the nutrition history that includes biochemical data, medical tests, and procedures. Second, nutrition diagnosis whereby, the nutritionist assesses the data collected to identify specific problems. This step is important in addressing malnutrition in the elderly. Third, nutrition intervention involves selecting a method that is directed to the root cause of the nutrition problem to alleviate the signs and symptoms. Lastly, nutrition monitoring and evaluation which aims at seeking if the client is making progress towards the goal and reducing the risk of diseases.
