This article consists of an analysis of social problems and social policy, a social problem is any condition or behavior that has negative consequences for large numbers of people. There must be a perception that a condition or behavior needs addressing for it to be considered a social problem. Such conditions or beliefs make up social constructionism. This is an invention or artifact of a particular culture or society which exists solely because people agree to behave as if it exists. Common social constructs include governments, titles, games, money, and many others, including schools and corporations. For this article, therefore, we will focus on domestic violence as a social problem.

Domestic violence is one of the aspects of the issues related to family violence. Such issues include parent abuse, child abuse, elder abuse, sibling violence, and domestic violence by police officers. These are social problems that must not continue because society perceives them as unwanted behavior. Social policy aims to avoid the experiences resulting from domestic violence. Additionally,  victims of domestic violence experience psychological trauma of abuse, anxiety, stress, loss of confidence, social isolation, and fear. The sociological understanding of social problems rests heavily on the concept of sociological imagination. People experience personal social problems all the time. It is easy to think that these problems are theirs alone. However, individual problems are often rooted in problems stemming from aspects of society. This is because such problems are the result of social constructionism. Problems in society help to account for problems that individuals experience. Sociological imagination refers to the ability to appreciate the structural basis for individual problems. This concept is helpful in understanding and finding solutions to social issues such as domestic violence.
