Adverse drug reactions are often confused with the side effects of medication. Adverse reactions often call for the discontinuation of the drug or reduction of the dose. Moreover, adverse drug reactions are harmful reactions that people face after the administration of a drug or a combination of drugs under normal use conditions. Contrarily, the side effects of medication are the effects that a drug causes other than the therapeutic effect that the medical administrator intends. Additionally, it occurs regardless of the dose. Physicians usually foresee these effects and explain to the patients that they may occur during the administration of the drug.
THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS
Adverse drug reactions are in various forms. They may be mild, moderate, severe, or lethal. If they are lethal, the manufacturers often mention them in black box warnings. Physicians may only predict the side effects of medication but not the adverse reaction that may occur. These symptoms may begin to appear after the first dose of chronic use. Furthermore, in some adults, they may cause functional deterioration, loss of appetite, depression, confusion, changes in mental status, and failure to thrive. Allergic adverse reactions occur after the administration of a drug. Additionally, they generally do not occur after the first dose. The symptoms include itching, rash, and hypotension.
